    In that same article from Harvard Business Review, they found a massive correlation between companies size rank from one year to the next.

    Basically, if you are a small company this year, you are 90% likely to be a small company next year.

    By comparison, if you are a large company this year, you are 90% likely to remain a large company next year

  • Reasons For Failure

    In an article from Lending Tree, written in 2020, they cite CB Insights study that discusses the 20 reasons why small businesses fail. Among them are: lack of market demand, lack of cash, wrong team, poor marketing, pricing issues, failure to pivot, disharmony among team members, and many more.

    Obviously, as businesses grow and change, so do their issues.

    A small business is going to be affected greatly by initial lack of market demand and not nearly as much in regards to pivoting.

    Whereas a large company may develop market demand issues over time and be forced into a pivot that they are unable to properly execute.

  • Common Pitfalls

    Most small businesses focus on the wrong things. In the 2019 HBR case study, they built a statistical model to quantify what factors increased the odds of scaling and surviving.

    Companies that invested in the intangibles had a significantly greater chance to not only survive, but level jump.

  • Intangibles

    Assets that can’t be quantified by a physical valuation such as: patents, copyright, R&D, brand, operational efficiency, strategy development and execution, exceptional workplace environment, reputation, and many others.

    These are the factors that weigh heavily into the success of a company, yet are typically pushed aside for other things that appear more important such as: building and equipment upgrades, physical labor, managing daily operations, and taking every job that comes through the door.
